Week Seven!

Standard

Another wonderfully full week in Mr. David’s class. We discussed our home neighborhoods and the neighborhoods that we’ve been building in class. We expanded on the neighborhood theme and began talking about how a village develops. We incorporated streets, railways, bridges, theaters, and parks into a larger entity on the rug. In Mr. Anthony’s art class we created lifelike animals and people using plasticine. Literacy saw Mr. David’s class responding thoughtfully to the characters and themes in books. During Game Friday we explored favorite games that friends brought in, games that challenged eye-hand co-ordination, and games that challenged the mind. I’m looking forward to another awesome week. Enjoy the collages below!

Week Six!

Standard

Another short, but full week in Mr. David’s class. We worked constructing card stock structures and neighborhoods on Tuesday and Thursday afternoon during theme time. Literacy saw Mr. David’s class delving deeper into word work, sorting words based on vowel pronunciation and beginning letters, writing, and discovering new words. In Mr. Anthony’s art class we explored perspective through the examination and discussion of visual artwork and the creation of our own. During Game Friday we worked with cubelets, designing robots that move, respond to the external environment, and even draw! We also played games in Ms. Maria’s Mystery Room! Enjoy the collages below!

Week Five

Standard

Last week was busy, short and exciting! We explored Yoga with Ms Vanessa; crossing streams on stepping stones, posing, and making bridges. Literacy time saw a focus on Word Work; discovering pronunciation, spelling, and sorting of words based on different variables. During Art with Mr. Anthony the children continued working on their rock art. We spent a little extra time in the afternoon before pickup each day building our classroom community on the Playground. It was a wonderful four days!

Week Four

Standard

Sadly, this week’s post is going to be a tad shorter than the previous three as I was out sick on Tuesday and Wednesday. I really missed my class!

Monday, September 25th

In Literacy, we continued talking about our Classroom Constitution. We shared the rules that we had crafted and discussed edits and changes. Ms. Vanessa was out, so instead of yoga/mindfulness we read books and made some of our own!

Thursday, September 28th

During Theme time in the afternoon we reviewed a slideshow of images from last week’s engineering challenge. We talked about the difficulties we had using clay and coffee stirrers to construct towers. I introduced packing peanuts and toothpicks and a different challenge – build a tower as high as two cylindrical blocks. The children were skeptical, but soon found that these materials were more suited to the task – the ‘peanuts’ were less ‘goopy’ and the toothpicks ‘more strong’.

Friday, September 29th

We read a book about feelings and emotions. The children enjoyed acting out what they were feeling and challenging their friends to work out the combinations of emotions that they were presenting. My math group and Ms. Vanessa’s worked through a multitude of math problems through a series of games and challenges.

Tuesday, September 19th

In Literacy, we continued preparing for the writing of our constitution. We built structures using coffee stirrers and clay; the goal was to suspend a cylindrical block above the table’s surface. The children had some inventive solutions!

Week Two

Standard

The first full week of school! Introduction of Creativity Morning! It was a wonderful week. The children learned new group routines and began to get a feel for what the structure of the week is like.

Monday, September 11th

In Literacy, the children were introduced to some new writing activities, sticker stories, and news from home. Mr. David’s and Ms. Vanessa’s math groups enjoyed a story about place value and counting by 10s. They then explored Base 10 Blocks and experimented using them to represent different numbers.

Monday

Tuesday, September 12th

In Literacy, the children continued sticker stories, and news from home. Mr. David’s and Ms. Vanessa’s math groups continued representing numbers using Base 10 Blocks. They partnered up with another friend and took turns writing down a number that the other friend would represent with the blocks. We began presenting our Five things that represent Me bags. The children loved discovering what they did and didn’t have in common. During afternoon Choice Time the children were challenged to build structures that were wider at the top than at the bottom. We also explored 48 to 60 piece puzzles.

Tuesday

Wednesday, September 13th

We had our first Creativity Morning on Wednesday! The children worked with saws in the shop with Mr. Josh, created news stories with Ms. Kara, built with Mr. Malcolm, and enjoyed other activities. In the afternoon Mr. Anthony worked with the children to create woven paper pieces. On the rug, the children continued sharing their Five things… bags.

Wednesday

Thursday, September 14th

More Five things… sharing both in the morning and afternoon. We also acted out different scenes from a Read-Aloud book, and talked about handmade furnishings. The children chose their favorite square from the Afghan and recreated it on paper.

Thursday

Friday, September 15th

Friday we played a variety of math games after a skip-counting lesson. In the afternoon we had Friday Game Day! The children played and taught each other games from tic-tac-toe to checkers to Forbidden Island to Stratego. It was a wonderful way to close the week.

Friday

First Week in Mr. David’s Classroom!

Gallery

The first week here in Lower Elementary at Acera has been exciting and productive. The children are settling in and have been enjoying learning, creating, and laughing with their new friends. Please enjoy the pictures below!

Tuesday, September 5th

We explored Pattern Blocks and studied pictures of insects with hand lenses and then drew them.

Wednesday, September 6th

We explored different construction materials (Keva Planks, Magna Tiles, Magna Sticks, and Big Blocks). We also had a chance to create some self-portraits with Mr. Anthony. He also worked with us to create a ‘Welcome Home’ banner for our room.

Thursday, September 7th

We explored patterns using unifix cubes, letters, words, sounds, and shapes with Ms. Vanessa during our Math time. We also began delving into our theme: Home. We discussed what we have in our own room and created a list. We also drew a picture of our room incorporating items and arrangements from our list.

Friday, September 8th

We continued creating patterns with Ms. Vanessa. We used Pattern Blocks to make 3-dimensional patterns as well as ones that incorporated more than one trait – number of sides, color, number in stack, etc. In the afternoon Esteé and Alisha from SEEDS joined us and showed us how to make LED ‘fireflies’ and how to fold and pierce cardboard to make a box that lets light through. When our boxes were assembled, we turned out the lights and arranged them as a group to created a light sculpture.
